WASHINGTON — Donald Trump and NATO chief Mark Rutte have defended military action against Iran, citing Persia’s burning of Athens in 480 BC.
“Beautiful city. They burned it. Nobody talks about it anymore,” Trump said.
Told that the Persian Empire no longer exists, he shrugged. “Same neighbourhood. Same problems.”
The White House has invoiced Tehran for the temples, starting from one drachma at 3% interest compounded since 480 BC. The bill runs to 33 digits.
“Frankly it’s a discount,” Trump said. Iran may pay in oil, or in carpets “if they’re good carpets.”
Greece asked if the money could go towards getting the Parthenon marbles back from London.
Iran replied that Alexander the Great burned Persepolis in 330 BC. Trump called that a separate matter, as Alexander was Macedonian. He was later told North Macedonia joined NATO in 2020.
Rutte said NATO historians are now reviewing the fall of Constantinople. Turkey’s delegation has asked to be excused.
