BRAKPAN — A Brakpan father has celebrated his son’s seventh birthday by presenting him with his first angle grinder, marking what the family described as an important step towards manhood.
The boy, who had reportedly been asking for a PlayStation, appeared overwhelmed as his father explained the difference between cutting and grinding discs.
‘At his age, I already knew how to remove a catalytic converter,’ said the proud father. ‘Kids today spend too much time indoors.’
The birthday party included a jumping castle, boerewors rolls and a supervised introduction to removing rust from a Ford Bantam.
According to relatives, the boy showed early promise after identifying three vehicles in the street that could benefit from modifications.
His grandfather, who received his first welding machine at five, expressed concern that the family was becoming soft.
‘Seven is quite late to start. By eight, his father had already built his first trailer.’
The boy’s mother insisted that appropriate safety precautions had been taken, confirming that he had received a pair of sunglasses and been instructed not to grind near the petrol tank.
