PRETORIA — With crime, unemployment and poverty apparently no longer requiring urgent attention, the South African government has turned its attention to renaming seven rivers in KwaZulu-Natal.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie approved the names as part of twelve geographical naming decisions published in the Government Gazette on 19 October.
‘It’s encouraging to see government finally addressing the issues keeping ordinary South Africans awake at night,’ said one official.
Residents welcomed the announcement, particularly those struggling with unemployment, rising food prices and unreliable municipal services.
‘My children are hungry, but at least the river has a name,’ said one father.
Officials have reassured communities that the new names will be recognised immediately, regardless of whether the rivers contain water.
The department is reportedly considering further geographical naming initiatives, including mountains, valleys and several potholes large enough to qualify as natural landmarks.
Meanwhile, residents have been advised that complaints about water shortages should be directed to the appropriate municipality, not the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
