JOHANNESBURG — The cow emoji has reportedly become South Africa’s fastest-growing digital symbol as families increasingly conduct lobola negotiations through WhatsApp and Zoom.
Traditionally conducted through lengthy family meetings, negotiations now involve WhatsApp groups where uncles exchange cow emojis, voice notes and increasingly aggressive counteroffers.
‘The groom’s family offered eight cows, but the bride’s uncle replied with twelve cow emojis and a thumbs-down,’ explained one negotiator. ‘We’re still waiting for his next message.’
The transition has introduced new complications, including relatives accidentally sending laughing emojis during sensitive discussions and elderly uncles struggling to unmute themselves during negotiations.
One family reportedly suspended talks after discovering that the groom’s uncle had forwarded their offer to another WhatsApp group.
A Johannesburg consultant has since launched an online lobola calculator, allowing families to compare cattle prices, qualifications and employment prospects.
Traditional negotiators remain divided over the technology, particularly whether a blue tick constitutes formal acceptance.
