CAPE TOWN — A 32-year-old Cape Town woman who has never finished reading a single Daily Maverick article is increasingly confident that she understands South Africa’s political, economic and social problems.
She describes herself as politically engaged and deeply concerned about democracy, reportedly reads between three and five headlines daily, occasionally venturing as far as the second paragraph.
‘You don’t need to read everything to understand what’s happening,’ she explained over an oat-milk cappuccino. ‘It’s about seeing the bigger picture.’
Her expertise extends to geopolitics, climate change, inequality and the country’s constitutional crisis, all of which she regularly discusses at dinner parties.
Friends say she frequently shares articles accompanied by the words ‘This is so important’, although she has never been able to explain what follows the paywall.
She recently cancelled a subscription after discovering that the publication expected her to read the articles rather than simply agree with the headlines.
‘The comments section is where the real journalism happens,’ she explained.
The Hadeda Heckler is a South African satirical news website. Some stories are invented, others are exaggerated and a few are disturbingly close to the truth. Any resemblance to actual government competence or the stupidity of the average man or woman is purely coincidental.
