JOHANNESBURG — Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has reportedly announced a new initiative offering free hotel showers to ANC voters affected by the province’s ongoing water shortages.
The programme aims to restore dignity to residents who have remained loyal to the liberation movement despite years of unreliable municipal services.
‘Our people fought for freedom, and that includes the freedom to shower,’ explained a government spokesperson.
Participating hotels will provide hot water, soap and towels bearing the ANC logo, although guests are advised to bring their own buckets in case of interruptions.
Residents will reportedly be required to produce proof of ANC membership or demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the Freedom Charter before being admitted.
Opposition supporters may apply for access but will be placed on a separate waiting list pending political verification.
The provincial government has dismissed suggestions that repairing water infrastructure would be a more sustainable solution.
‘Building new pipelines takes years,’ explained an official. ‘A five-star hotel already has bathrooms.’
The programme will initially operate in Sandton, where water remains available in selected establishments.
