PRETORIA — The South African government is reportedly considering making farm murders a priority crime after police made significant progress in their campaign against teenagers performing wheelies on bicycles.
Police officials say the successful identification of several young cyclists riding on one wheel has created an opportunity to redirect resources towards other forms of criminal activity.
‘We cannot tackle everything at once,’ explained a senior official. ‘These wheelies have been happening in broad daylight, sometimes right in front of motorists.’
The crackdown reportedly involved specialised patrols, intelligence gathering and several hours examining TikTok videos.
With the bicycle situation increasingly under control, authorities are now considering whether farm attacks warrant similar attention.
A police spokesperson cautioned that the government had yet to establish whether farm murders were sufficiently serious to warrant priority status, stressing that further research and consultation would be needed before reaching a decision.
Officials have nevertheless expressed confidence that progress is possible.
The department is reportedly preparing a feasibility study to determine whether existing anti-wheelie resources can be redeployed without compromising bicycle safety.
