An Afrikaner family resettled in Texas under the US refugee programme says a diner asked it for a 25% tip on Tuesday.
Johan van der Merwe, formerly of Brakpan, had just paid $86 for four burgers and two milkshakes when the waitress turned the card machine towards him. The options were 20%, 25% and 30%.
“There was no 10%. I checked twice,” he said. “At the Spur in Brakpan I tipped R20 and they sang happy birthday to my daughter. It wasn’t even her birthday.”
His wife, Marietjie, said their youngest daughter cried when she found out the menu prices didn’t include tax.
“We left South Africa because we were afraid of losing everything,” Van der Merwe said. “At this rate, we will.”
