JOHANNESBURG — A second-hand ANC has appeared on AutoTrader, advertised as a non-runner requiring extensive repairs and with little prospect of passing a roadworthy test.
The vehicle, first registered in 1994 and once regarded as the most desirable in South Africa, has reportedly suffered three decades of poor maintenance, questionable modifications and several changes of driver, one of whom was recalled by the manufacturer.
According to the listing, the engine runs entirely on patronage, the brakes have not been applied in years and the steering pulls sharply towards whoever is offering the most money.
The service history is unavailable, having been destroyed in what the seller describes as a mysterious fire. Several original components have since been replaced with inferior parts, sourced through government tenders and invoiced at several times the price.
Prospective buyers are warned that the vehicle comes without papers, a spare wheel or any guarantee that its current occupants will surrender the keys.
The seller insists the vehicle remains in excellent condition for its age, despite repeated breakdowns and dwindling turnout at viewings.
Gauteng ANC chairperson Panyaza Lesufi, who has called the DA’s Helen Zille an “old Ford Cortina”, declined to say what that made the ANC.
An independent assessor, who asked not to be named for fear of redeployment, estimated that repairs would cost considerably more than the vehicle’s market value.
AutoTrader has since advised interested buyers that the asking price is negotiable, but the debt is not.
