CAPE TOWN — Police on the Cape Flats have introduced a cost-saving initiative that involves placing crime scene tape around areas where nobody has recently been shot.
The new approach follows concerns over the rising cost of yellow police tape, which officers have traditionally used to cordon off shooting scenes.
‘We realised we were spending enormous amounts of money marking places where shootings had occurred,’ explained a police spokesperson. ‘It’s much cheaper to identify the few places where they haven’t.’
Under the new system, officers will cordon off streets where no shootings have been reported during the previous 48 hours.
Residents have welcomed the initiative, although some expressed concern that the designated safe areas might become overcrowded.
Police confirmed that the programme had already identified two qualifying locations, including a traffic island and part of a church parking area.
Officials are considering expanding the initiative to other crime-ridden communities.
